Why Should I Change My Air Filter Regularly?

First, it’s important to understand why an air filter is essential to your AC working properly. Stationed at the point where air is pulled into your system, the filter traps dust and debris, keeping it from being blown into your home and from clogging your system’s coils. While it’s easy to “set it and forget it,” these few points will explain why remembering to change your filter is so critical.

Most importantly, swapping out the AC filter in your home saves you money! An old, obstructed air filter will cause your unit’s fan motor to work harder than it needs to, consuming more energy in the process.

Secondly, clean air promotes better health. In recent years, manufacturers have improved the design of their filters to remove microscopic particles like dust, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, plant and mold spores from the air in your home. It’s just as important to us as it is to you that the air in your home is clean and breathable.

Last (but not least!), changing your filter regularly prevents unnecessary repairs. Clogged filters restrict the system’s airflow, which then adds extra strain on the handler fan and motor. If this continues for long periods of time, your AC can overheat and fail. Especially in the Florida heat, you want to avoid going without AC in your home!

How Often Should I Change My Air Conditioning Filter?

How often you should change your air filter can vary depending on the type of filter you’re using, the number of occupants and pets in your home, and the level of air pollution and construction in your area.

When it comes to the basic 1-3” air filters, we recommend you take these things into consideration:

  • For vacation or single-occupant homes: change every 6-12 months.
  • Average family home, no pets: change every 90 days.
  • Family home, one pet: change every 60 days.
  • Family home with more than one pet, or with an occupant who has allergies: change every 20-45 days.
